Overcoming the Adversary
Text: 1John 1,2; Matth. 4;
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. 1John 3:1-3;
Afterward talk about this
Which method the Christ used in overcoming the adversary and will overcome in your daily trial.
Things to do before the next time
Fast for two days according to isaiah principle after the fast go proclaim the gospel in a village or town you have never be don’t hesitate to pray for the sick and does in bondage.
Meditate on this verses. 1John 3;
Write your experience in the village or town in two pages and suubmit to us.
To overcome the adversary we should not invent because he is wiser than we are, nor should we rely on our experience because we can’t match his experience neither should we rely on our righteousness because our righteousness is a filthy rag because we where born in sin, we where born into sin and has in herited it, neither should we rely on our knowledge because there is nothing we can hid from him but there is an example of a man we must follow, this man was tested in every way as we are yet found without sin so let us learn how he overcome and follow his footstep in Matth. 4:1-3; “1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he afterward hungered.3 And the tempter came and said unto him, If thou art the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.“ From this verse we understand that satan did not start his temptation until he knew he was very hungry and weak to the extent that he will need some food at all cost, so note that the adversary will not tempt you on your guilded hour when you are strong or when your way pleases God but he will come on your unguilded hour when you are confused as for what to do or which direction to take or when you are leaping between two opinion, note that he will not tempt when you are expecting him. We see that his first move was to cast doubt on your mind, the question is did Christ need a prove to know he is the son of God? Of course he don’t but Satan said that to cast doubt in his mind making him to think if I am the son of God, I should have power to convert stone into bread which make the power of God not different from magic, which should be display to satisfy Audience which will lead to abuse of grace, this should be a lesson to us believer to understand that God is not magician so our faith is not for display of power but to do his will, not for self gratification.
Christ respond was directed at the written word not on prayer or authority but through the demostration of the written word of God in Matth. 4:4; “4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” Christ respond did not cut corner or ask Satan who told you I was hungry because Satan knew he was hungry, his answer demostrate his depend on the word more than necessary food, like the psalmetry said I esteem the word of of God more than my necessary food, christ demonstrate ability to put God first before any earthly need. This is a defeat for the adversary which should have make him quit but on the contrary he know what is persistency he doesn’t leave at first defeat, he have some few ideals more. So now that he has tested your needs he see that you are heavenly focus he is going to move to fase two, is going to make a sucidal attempt on you advising you to kill yourself that God would not let you die, at this point he will hid the verse that say you should not take life, in Matth. 4:5,6; ” 5 Then the devil taketh him into the holy city; and he set him on the pinnacle of the temple,6 and saith unto him, If thou art the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and, On their hands they shall bear thee up, Lest haply thou dash thy foot against a stone.” In this verse we see the Devil given him a reason why he should kill himself, as a test of God promise which are written in other word you said you believe In God prove it to me or like the pharisee who demand a sign so be careful when you find youself in similar condition that you don’t go asking God for sign because you would not see one because you are putting God to test therefore is not faith whatever is not faith is a sin, from the first temptation christ reply satan by quoting the scripture but in the second trier satan by say it is written because he has the complete bible in his head he going to prove how much quotation that you qoute are actually part of your day today life, the is the point where christian who memorised Bible verse fall because his word are also from the Bible but without taking time to try the word as mouth try meat. But how did Christ respond to this temptation let see the book of Matth. 4:7; “7 Jesus said unto him, Again it is written, Thou shalt not make trial of the Lord thy God.” See that christ respond by quoting a countering scripture not to cancel the first scripture because is the correct word of God but to correct the intention of the interpretation, telling him God wrote it down also that we should not tempt him, note don’t try to remember verses in your head but rather study prayerfully the Holy Spirit will gives you understanding to choose the accurate word as he help Christ during his temptation study because he will not take what you don’t have is what you have he will make used of, that is the second defeat but he is not through he at this point will seek to shift your focus from God purpose to earthly gain and materialism as in Matthew 4:8,9; “8 Again, the devil taketh him unto an exceeding high mountain, and showeth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;9 and he said unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.” The question would devil have given Jesus the world if he worship him, the answer is yes he can, that was why Christ did not protest his ability but Christ has a kingdom that is not of this world so he was not interested in any form of earthly kingdom not to talk of worshipping devil to have it, this is a lesson to us that we let our communication as Christian be heavenly because if you love the world you will have to compromise God to have it but how did he overcome this move of Satan in Matth. 4:10; “10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.” First reaction was a rebuke then he followed be it written, so christian should base their communication on it is written because it is written means absolute confidence in the written word of God.
Spend a minute to change the World
Pray that God should help christian to stand blameless in this perilous time, to remain true to the written word of God
